Understanding the FSW 67-Point Grid: Are You Eligible for Express Entry?
Introduction
The Federal Skilled Worker (FSW) program is one of Canada's flagship pathways for immigration. If you are an experienced professional living outside Canada, this is likely your gateway to permanent residency.
However, before you can enter the Express Entry pool and get ranked by your CRS score, you must first pass a preliminary hurdle: the FSW Selection Grid.
To qualify, you must score at least 67 out of 100 points on this grid. In this article, we explain how these points are awarded. You can calculate your points instantly with our FSW 67-Point Grid Calculator.
The Six Selection Factors (100 Points Total)
IRCC evaluates your eligibility based on six core factors:
1. Language Skills (Max 28 Points)
Communicating in English or French is crucial. Points are awarded based on your test scores in speaking, listening, reading, and writing:
- First Language: Up to 24 points (minimum CLB 7 required to get points).
- Second Language: Up to 4 bonus points (minimum CLB 5 required).
2. Education (Max 25 Points)
You must submit an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) for foreign degrees:
- High school diploma: 5 points.
- Bachelor's degree: 21 points.
- Master's degree: 23 points.
- PhD: 25 points.
3. Work Experience (Max 15 Points)
Points are awarded for full-time, paid work experience in skilled occupations (TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3):
- 1 year: 9 points.
- 2 to 3 years: 11 points.
- 4 to 5 years: 13 points.
- 6 or more years: 15 points.
4. Age (Max 12 Points)
- Maximum points (12) are awarded to candidates between the ages of 18 and 35.
- After age 35, you lose 1 point per year, dropping to 0 points at age 47.
5. Arranged Employment in Canada (Max 10 Points)
You can gain 10 points if you have a valid, full-time job offer from a Canadian employer backed by an LMIA.
6. Adaptability (Max 10 Points)
Adaptability factors reward family and past history in Canada:
- Spouse's language score (CLB 5+): 5 points.
- Past study or work in Canada: 5 points.
- Relatives in Canada: 5 points.
FSW Eligibility vs. CRS Ranking: The Difference
Many applicants confuse these two point systems:
- The FSW Grid (Out of 100): A pass/fail entry gate. If you score 67+, you are allowed to enter the Express Entry pool.
- The CRS Score (Out of 1200): The competitive ranking system. Once inside the pool, your profile is ranked against others. Scoring 67 on the FSW grid does not mean your CRS score is 67.
Conclusion
If you score 66 points, you cannot enter the pool, even if your qualifications are excellent. Focus on retaking language tests or evaluating spouse credentials to cross the 67-point line.
