Introduction

In 2023, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) introduced a major shift in how it selects candidates from the Express Entry pool: Category-Based Selection.

Instead of inviting candidates based solely on their overall CRS score, IRCC now conducts targeted draws for candidates who have specific work experience or language skills.

In this guide, we explain the eligible categories and targeted occupations. Check your eligibility for Express Entry with the Express Entry CRS Calculator.

The 6 Express Entry Target Categories

To qualify for a category-based draw, you must meet the general Express Entry requirements and have work experience (usually at least 6 months within the last 3 years) in one of the following targeted areas:

1. French-Language Proficiency

  • Candidates with strong French skills (minimum CLB 7 in all 4 language abilities) are highly prioritized, often requiring much lower CRS scores.

2. Healthcare Occupations

  • Target occupations include doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and dentists.

3. STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) Occupations

  • Includes software engineers, web developers, data scientists, and civil engineers.

4. Trades Occupations

  • Targets carpenters, plumbers, electricians, and contractors.

5. Transport Occupations

  • Covers truck drivers, pilots, and marine traffic controllers.

6. Agriculture and Agri-Food Occupations

  • Includes farm supervisors and agricultural service contractors.

Advantage of Category-Based Selection

CRS scores for targeted draws (especially French language and STEM) are frequently lower than the scores required for general draws, giving candidates in these fields a major advantage.

Conclusion

If your occupation falls under one of the target categories or if you speak French, your path to Canadian PR is significantly shorter.
